Retrospectives on a 125th birthday

The graphic artist and illustrator Hermann Kätelhön (*22 September 1884 in Hofgeismar, †24.11.1940 in Munich) remains present especially in the Ruhr district of Germany, where his hewing certificates and long-service diplomas designed with wide-ranging motifs from his more than 20 years of involvement in the mining industry hang in many houses with a mining tradition. These motifs include industry scapes with collieries pictured in perfect detail in their structures as well as depictions of the life and work of miners underground. Kätelhön also moved confidently in the society of the industrial tycoons, evidenced by his portraits of the most influential managers in mining industry. His talent as a portrait painter brought him to Essen in 1916. In Willings-hausen, his place of work and roots of his artistic career, the “Malerstübchen”, a salon of painters co-founded by him in 1931, is arranging an extensive exhibition of the rich spoils of his creativity to mark the 125th birthday of their fellow artist from 17.10.-20.12.2009.
